Gifts of Stock

One way you can support the Davis Phinney Foundation is by making a gift of stock. By donating appreciated securities directly to the Davis Phinney Foundation instead of cash, or after selling them, many donors are able to increase their impact and increase their tax deductions.

Read on for more information about the benefits of donating stock as well as details on how to make your donation.

BENEFITS OF A DIRECT GIFT OF STOCKS AND SECURITIES

When you donate your securities directly, you may qualify for a bigger tax deduction than if you were to sell your stock and donate the net, after-tax proceeds to the Foundation. The tax code generally permits a charitable donation deduction for the full market value of your direct gift of securities. Alternatively, if you sell your stock and donate the net proceeds, you may owe capital gains taxes if the stock or securities have appreciated in value since you first acquired them. In this case, you will be left with a smaller amount to donate and have a smaller charitable donation deduction.

Donating stock or securities offers a number of benefits:

  • A federal income charitable contribution tax deduction based on the stock’s fair market value on the date of the gift (up to 30% of your adjusted gross income) if the stock was owned for more than one year*
  • Carryover of the deduction for up to five additional years if the fair market value of the gift is more than 30% of your adjusted gross income
  • Avoidance of capital gains tax that is due when you sell appreciated stock

*Note: Stock owned for one year or less is considered a short-term asset and usually won’t produce attractive tax benefits.

Also, if stock has decreased in value, selling it and making a cash gift to the Davis Phinney Foundation is likely more beneficial. You can take a capital loss on federal taxes and still enjoy a charitable deduction up to 50% of your adjusted gross income.

Your donation of commonly held, publicly traded stocks and securities to the Davis Phinney Foundation is a simple and powerful way to support our work.

LEARN MORE ABOUT DONATING STOCK

The easiest way for you to gift stock or securities to the Davis Phinney Foundation is through an electronic transfer from your brokerage account to Davis Phinney Foundation’s account. Please remind your broker to include your name, contact information, and special instructions for the transfer. This information is essential for timely acknowledgment. When stocks are transferred electronically, we are informed only of the stock name and the number of shares, not the name of the donor. If you don’t share your gift intent with us, it may delay the gift acknowledgment for tax reporting purposes.

If you plan to make an electronic donation, please reference this form.

Your gift of securities will be recognized by us at the market price on the first business day it is held in our account. For a gift to be acknowledged for the current tax year, it must be received on or before December 31.

Each gift of stock we receive strengthens our work in the Parkinson’s community while providing tax benefits for supporters. Follow these step-by-step instructions, or share them with your broker, to take advantage of this planned giving opportunity:
