LEAVE A LEGACY OF SUPPORT FOR THE PARKINSON’S COMMUNITY

The Davis Phinney Foundation Legacy Society honors individuals who have chosen to create a bequest to the Foundation and provides us with the opportunity to hear their stories and benefit from their input during their lifetime. Planned giving is a powerful way to help people and families affected by Parkinson's live well today, tomorrow, and for generations to come. It may also allow you to give at a more significant level than traditional giving and offers some important tax benefits for you.

Learn More About Our Legacy Society

Several members of our community are great examples of how important and rewarding planned giving can be. Don Doles is one such person. Don has set up a charitable bequest to the Foundation so that he can continue to make resources available to others who may not have the same access.

Planned giving donations may help you avoid capital gains taxes, receive tax deductions upfront, and may have other financial benefits for you and your family. These legacy gifts help us expand our reach and ensure that our work continues in perpetuity.

As part of the Legacy Society, you will gain access to special benefits, including:

  • A personal Foundation contact
  • Quarterly updates about the Foundation's work
  • Invitations to special events

Legacy gifts are vitally important to help sustain and support our mission for generations to come. To make it easy to create a lasting legacy at the Davis Phinney Foundation, we’ve partnered with FreeWill. FreeWill is a free, online resource that allows you to write your will in 20 minutes or less and easily include a legacy gift to the Davis Phinney Foundation.

The tool is always free to use and can be completed online or used to create a list of wishes to bring to an attorney. Start your will today.

There are many ways to participate in planned giving with the Davis Phinney Foundation. Here are some of the most common vehicles:

Wills and Trusts (Bequests)

Join our Legacy Society by making a gift to the Davis Phinney Foundation in your will or trust. Wills and trusts are the most common planned gift. You may adjust your plans at any time if life circumstances change. This type of donation to the Foundation in your will or living trust helps ensure that we continue our mission for years to come.

Start your bequest today using FreeWill — a free resource to help you write your legal will in 20 minutes.

Gifts from your IRA

If you are 70.5 or older, you can make a tax-free donation to the Davis Phinney Foundation directly from your IRA. These gifts, known as “Qualified Charitable Distributions”, provide you tax benefits, whether or not you itemize deductions on your tax return and can be a powerful gift to support our mission and help people with Parkinson’s live well. Using our online resource, you can:

  • Make your tax-free gift online
  • Download the forms necessary to complete your gift offline

Gifts of Cash

A gift of cash by credit card, check or money order is the simplest way to support our work and see the impact of your gift immediately. There are other ways to give that may have more added tax benefits for you and your family.

Stocks and Bonds

Did you know you can donate appreciated stocks or other securities to the Foundation? Gifting these to the Foundation can help you avoid tax on capital gains and can give you a charitable tax deduction. Please refer to the “Donate Stocks and Securities” dropdown on our Ways to Give page for more information.

Memorial or Tribute Gifts

If you have a loved one who has been impacted by the Davis Phinney Foundation’s work, establishing a memorial or tribute gift is a meaningful way to honor your loved one. Tribute gifts are also a great way to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday while supporting our mission. Your memorial or honor gift will be a lasting tribute to your loved one and make a difference in the lives of those we serve.

Gifts of Real Estate

Did you know donating your home, land, vacation property, or other real estate to the Foundation can help you avoid capital gains taxes?

Retirement Assets

When you name the Davis Phinney Foundation as the primary beneficiary on your retirement, you can avoid income and estate taxes. A gift from your IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or inherited IRA are all excellent ways to support the Foundation.

Gifts of Insurance

Did you know that you can designate the Foundation as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy? You can also name the Foundation as an owner of the policy. This can allow you to receive a charitable deduction and reduce your estate taxes.

Donor Advised Fund

Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are an increasingly popular way to contribute to charity by allowing a donor to store future contributions in a fund that provides a tax benefit upon deposit and accrues interest. When you make a Donor Advised Fund gift, it’s possible that the sponsoring organization will not share your information with us. Please send us a note at giving@davisphinneyfoundation.org when you’ve made a gift so we can make sure to thank you and ensure that your gift gets to where it is intended.

You can make a charitable donation by naming the Davis Phinney Foundation as a beneficiary in your will. The federal government encourages these gifts or bequests by allowing an unlimited estate-tax charitable deduction. There are four ways you can make a bequest:

General Bequest

This is the most popular type of charitable bequest. You simply leave a specified dollar amount to the designated charity.

Residual Bequest

Your estate will cover all debts, taxes, expenses, and specific bequests. The remaining amount — the residue — will be transferred to the Foundation.

Contingent Bequest

You can ask that the Foundation receive all or a portion of your estate only under certain circumstances. For example, you can name the Foundation as a beneficiary of your estate only if there are no surviving close family members. Childless couples sometimes provide for the entire estate to go to the surviving spouse, or if the spouse does not survive, to the Davis Phinney Foundation.

Percentage Bequest

You can designate a percentage of the estate or of the residual estate. If the size of the estate changes, the bequest to the Davis Phinney Foundation will change in the same proportion.
